“Archery?” I said to no one in particular. When Jeremy announced the next activity, I felt my heart sink at the thought of spending the morning with a bow and arrow trying to hit a target and embarrassing myself in front of everyone. It would bring back all the nightmares of gym class when I would shoot for the net and miss, only to be laughed at by my teammates. Why did we have to do this?

Ryan seemed excited. I felt like if we had met in high school we wouldn’t have been dating. He was giving off ‘jock energy’ and I suspected that he would immediately excel at every sport he tried, and I would be humiliated and reluctant to participate in anything else for the rest of the day.

This trip was seeming less and less like a networking event and just a summer camp for magical adults with wine. Obviously, that sounds great, but there have been two people killed on this mountain and everything was just continuing as normal. As we approached the archery field, which was really just a small clearing on the other side of the campsite, I realized why Ryan thought this would be so much fun.

There were no targets or plastic deer leaning up against hay bales. The game was designed to be basically laser tag, but with bows and arrows. I couldn’t quite understand how it all worked, we were being given, what looked like, real equipment. How was this not dangerous?

“You haven’t played this before?” Ryan asked. I shook my head and screwed up my face in a ‘of course not’ way. “You wear these special vests and then when the arrow laser hits you, the shooter gets points! The whole thing is still weighted so it will feel like you are really firing an arrow but obviously they are magic and don’t leave the bow, a phantom arrow will travel forward to hit your target.” What could go wrong?

I collected a dark brown vest with a lavender stripe across the back. The colored stripes were to assign us to teams, and I looked around to see if there were any other lavender people nearby, but once people had their gear, they were running into the trees to wait for the starting claxon. Ryan was securing his vest either side of his waist.

“Hey, we’re on the same team!” I said.

“Not by accident,” he smiled. “You look nervous, so I figured we could work together.”

“Competitive sports make me tense. Especially team events like this, if I am bad at it then it drags everybody else down,” I groaned. I tightened the vest straps and collected my bow and arrow from Jeremy who was handing them out. I thanked him and turned back to Ryan.

“It’s just a game, it’s not a big deal. The winning team gets the first run at the dessert table tonight at dinner, that’s all. As all the food is unlimited here, I wouldn’t worry,” he said reassuringly. Jeremy handed over Ryan’s equipment and then stepped closer to me to kiss my forehead.
